Challenges
The process of completing this assignment was quite challenging.
The first challenge that we undergo was trying to insert CMC into the subject
that we have chose which is Error and Contrastive Analysis. It was quite difficult for
all of us as we had to redo the title of the research for almost nine times but
in the end, we managed to come up with a good title. With this title that we had
written, it has provide us with a clear direction on what we were trying to
explore and study. We hoped that by conducting the research we would be able to
identify the major errors that most Malaysian do. The second difficulty is in terms of choosing the right and best blog for our research. We do not know much on who actually owns a blog hence it took us quite some time to search and choose blogs that suit our needs. Many blogs were written by bloggers whom are famous and who write for their profession. What we are finding, are those whom are not English writers but who write for pleasure and for leisure (focusing on personal entries/diary.) The research, however, was
limited into only five pages, thus, we had to make the research as compact as
possible. After completing and presenting the research, we identified several
problems and limitations of the research hence these problems need to be
improved for future research.
Improvements
1. Facts. If you are trying to study the
language structure of a Chinese, an intensive research needs to be done in
order to have valid facts to prove that the sentence structure conducted by the
participant was influenced by the person’s mother tongue which is Chinese
language.
2. Interview. By just identifying the errors of
the participants was not enough. The research needs an understanding of all participants
whether they realized the mistakes that they have done or whether they simply
do not care of the grammatical errors that they had made because the corpus that
we used was their blogs. Blogs tend to use an informal and leisure writing
style, thus, they might write their entries despite knowing the mistakes they had
made and would not care to correct them. Therefore, an interview session with
the participants is needed to understand the participant and get more
accurate reasons/results.
3. Mode of the research. The mode used for the research was
blog (asynchronous CMC). The nature of the blog being too leisure (free style)
is not a good corpus to be used for Error and Contrastive analysis. However,
other online network that can be used is social networking
